Daham Sirisena Responds To Nepotism Charge

Daham Sirisena, son of President Maithripala Sirisena, who came in for a lot of flak for accompanying his father to the UN General Assembly although he had no official representative status has posted a ‘rebuttal’ on his Facebook page (where he describes himself as a public figure). The following is the full note posted by the young Sirisena;

Dear friends,

What is nepotism? The real meaning behind it is the abuse of power with influence favoring one’s children, relatives and friends especially by giving them occupations. Open your minds to this definition and take a moment to think whether this is being practiced in Sri Lanka now. Many have been criticizing my visit to the Delegation, saying that it is nepotism and that i am unjustifiably abusing my father’s power. Let me put my friends’ minds at rest, by firstly saying that i was officially invited to the Delegation since my mother couldn’t attend. Secondly by attending the event i got the opportunity to attend the youth-led event of SDG which made me understand the goals which is needed for the country to be more prosperous. How could my attendance be a negative effect to the country? How could my attendance be the downfall of the country? I urge you all not to compare me and my family with the past regiments as we are far different from them.

At the event The officials stated that, next time to bring in more youths with more innovative ideas which could in turn enrich our country by seeing my presence. I believe that this is a great opportunity to give positive recognition to our country.

Dude Daham, you really do seem to have a low IQ.

MERIT, which is a proven track record of high IQ, academic and/or sports achievement and LEADERSHIP among youth, is the criteria that should be used for youth to attend the UN youth Summit.

Daham Do you have any qualifications? a university degree perhaps? Proven talent in leadership of and among youth?

It seems that Your only qualification is being the son of Sirisena who is himself quite uneducated and also morally corrupt having nominated all kinds of crooks into the SLFP national list.

MERIT which is to say qualifications,IQ, skills, high achievement in academics and sport, rather than family corruption should be the basis for selecting Lankan youth to attend the UN. Seems that the cheat Namal Jarapassa is Daham’s role model..

In the present government, can you see a huge difference between the UNP members led by Ranil and the SLFP/UPFA members including Sirisena. All those same old currupt SLFP politicians are doing the same thing what they did during the last 10 years. They will never change.

This is all the more reason Ranil should have either formed a minority government or got the TNA-JVP combine – it would have been far better for good governance!!!

Very true! Best to keep the mouth shut when you’re caught with the pants down. Surely, the President could have found a young, talented, high achiever to represent Sri Lanka at this youth conference. Nobody would have heard of the president’s son Daham until this farcical episode. Certainly not for achievements and talents. Is this good governance as Sobitha thero promised? We were promised humilty but what’s dished out is humbug.

All those who are writing negatively here are the supporters of JARAPASSA who just can’t stomach anything good just because it’s not JARAPASSA clan.
The mantra for these kind of people do not give bones . Just ignore, while you prove them wrong , that you’re not what they implying to be.

Analyst remember Rajapaksa use the same excuse when the corruption and nepotism pointed out to him so you seems to have learnt well just as new President. And by the way young man got lost in translation trying to explain. Nepotism is favoritism granted to relatives. Second grader will understand this point. If Dahama is the future of Sri Lanka at least we can assume nothing going to change status Coe will long live in Sri Lanka. Amazing how just like days of old MR’s actions vigorously defended by his supporters now MS supporters taken a leaf out of the same play book. One thing for sure Dahama has exposed one fact to the world corruption & nepotism alive & well in Sri Lanka.

I agree with you to someextent, but commentators seem to be very against any kind of nepotism to raise head in the newly built environment. That is I think right. Had the delegation (experts) thought it right few weeks earlier, nothing like the kind of defarmation would have been the case. Actually, MY3 sacrificed a lot to become what he is today. People s applause he won at the begining to now, but doing things wihtout thinking twice , he could loose his respect among the folks drastically. This country moves today thorugh social media than anything else- its impact is becoming very high. 1MIO newly added voters are reported to be connected to social media regular manner. So their exchanges very quick outreaching the masses within hours. It is right once bitten twice shy.

The deligation was selected to do a job. Not to go and enjoy a trip as you do now. So according to your definition Selecting you and give job in that delegation it is nepotism. Who invited you to the deligation. What do you do in the government. You came from England. After this you will go there again. You have very bad record and reputation in what happen in Batticlo. Daham Sirisena,

Firstly, you could never ‘replace’ your mother. If your mother had attended, we would not be commenting. In any case, this was business, not a state visit, so it was not necessary for your mother to accompany the President.

You, Daham, are a callow young man with a haughty and arrogant sense of entitlement, and prone to violent outbursts, usually when backed up by your security detail. You have an unreconstructed character, and you have not been held to account for serious misdemeanours that you have committed.

The President was elected to establish new and higher standards of governance, including behaviour, in public life. This misjudgement betrays that mission.

Apropos ‘the opportunity to attend the youth-led event of SDG’ I can think of at least a dozen or more decent young people, infinitely more qualified and capable of representing our country, and who would project an altogether far more favourable impression of our young people.

You write ‘I urge you all not to compare me and my family with the past regiments as we are far different from them’ Believe you me, young man, WE the people would love to, but on the evidence we have seen so far, there are serious grounds for thinking that we seem to be getting more of the same.

In these days we live in a global village and your sullied reputation has spread far and wide. Contacts have told me that there were guffaws behind the hands you shook. This would have been a distraction, and an undermining of your father’s judgement.

Daham, retreat and clear your name. With sincere humility there is much that you can do, hands on, to show that you are not in the mould of the other brats who have plagued our country with bad behaviour and cheesier smiles. We are a forgiving lot, and we do recognise the power of genuine atonement. If you can do that, you will have a future to be truly proud of.

I commend all those who have taken time to comment. Not to do so would be to accept that ‘everything is fine and dandy’ and that would only lead others to think that this is perfectly acceptable behaviour. It cannot be. Unless WE the people shout, and shout loud from the highest rooftops, we can only blame ourselves when things get worse.Entitlement leads to impunity and impunity may well lead to another diplomat getting a slapping, or worse. You know that is the last thing on our minds.

RE: Daham Sirisena Responds To Nepotism Charge

You certainly need a good advisor, a mentor and a good consultant to protect you from yourself.

You should have kept your mouth shut. You should have 10 ears and 1 mouth.

Have you heard about the crow, the fox and the cheese? One stupid crow, one wise crow and the foxes are always cunning.

One stupid crow has found a piece of cheese and retired to a branch to eat it. A fox, wanting it for himself, flatters the crow, calling it beautiful and wondering whether its voice is as sweet to match. When it lets out a caw, the cheese falls and is devoured by the fox.

One smart crow has found a piece of cheese and retired to a branch to eat it. A fox, wanting it for himself, flatters the crow, calling it beautiful and wondering whether its voice is as sweet to match. The smart crow, puts the cheese on the branch, holds with its legs, lets out a caw. The cheese stays on the branch, does not fall, and cunning the fox is amazed.

Daham, try to be a smart crow, not a stupid one.

By the way, get a few good ties, some well tailored suits, and get some good mentors. Nobody is perfect, but correct your mistakes and move on.

    Dear Daham,

Nothing wrong with you accompanying your father on his US trip. I doubt you could be any worse than any of our cabinet ministers. As long as you behave yourself and do your parents and country proud.

You and your sisters are in the ineviable position of being compared to the Rajapakse siblings. That is the burden you have to bear on behalf of your father. Educate yourself well about men and matters, and Sri Lanka will admire your achievements. You are blessed with a mother who is graceful even in her absence and a father who is trying really hard to be a good leader. You are having a front seat to their different struggles and this should make you a better man.

Lets call a spade a spade! Protocol was definitely violated when you were seated behind your Dad at the UN sessions. If you were there for the UN Youth sessions, that is where you should have been. Not in the General Assembly Hall. Meeting World leaders when accompanying your Dad is a different story. This is something your Dad has to clear up in his mind, and not for your to resolve. Then, most leaders are fathers themselves and would clearly understand your Dad’s desire to have you near him on these occasions. Actually them might be envious of him.

I dont think it is his fault to have sat on a chair behind to his father inthe GA. It was the delegation that had to decide it – before going to do any kind of thing. How could the young chap know whether it is right or wrong. I think the mission that led to GA was a not matured enough to let this happening. Now the young chap has to bear and share the blame being made by people. Think before leap is valid more for the mission rather than to the imatured young fellow.

        7

I fully agree with you. Daham Sirisena should have been given a lesson on Protocal by the Sri Lankan mission at the UN. Are they still following the “Yes, Sir” system that prevailed during MARA’s time? They must learn to point out when something is wrong, without trying to be ‘President’s Henchmen’.

          Kalu Nangi,

I think our people should learn planning it before going to repeat the kind of things.

Europeans would plan months before who is going to do what etc… so properly so that events could work as theory expresses them:
Lack of proper planning has caused greater damage to the president this time. In many areas he had been neutral sofar, but to just let it go with his son and daugher to do whatever they think is right could bring more harm to the president in next day.

People are fed up nepotism since MR has appointed any condom tester or coconut plucker to carrier jobs such as working for embassies during his last time. The best example is Jaliya Wickramsooriya to allow run Washignton office. In the same time, former majors to run embassies. All these were subjected to ridicule and MR lost his respect to that level among the middle class people, only for that matter. I hope not that MY3 would march in the same path wihtout thinking twice – even if his emerged was totally different compared to any other presidents sofar.

I agree with Upul. While there is no great objection to your accompanying your father, you had NO status in the Official SL Delegation.Further you say you were able to attend the Youth Sessions. What qualifications had you to do so? There are probably more young people with better qualifications than you. So you were able to attend the Youth Sessions merely because you are the President’s son. This is what is termed NEPOTISM. A privilege NOT granted to others, but to someone merely because of a family relationship.

    Daham

Your father had no business inviting your mother to accompany him to New York on tax payers account. You may have heard of the saying “once bitten twice shy”. The Rajapaksas took us for a long long ride over a long period of time. If that is the kind of bus you are planning we don’t want to get into your bus.

If you want to enter politics, do it like normal people. Come up the ladder, unlike Namal Baby. Acquire the experience in the normal way. to park yourself at the head of the queue is an injustice to those already in line. Taking advantage of birth, and being just handed over advantage by your dad for reason of being his son is NEPOTISM. Revise your definition.

In the meantime read some good books in the English language.

No spouse was present at the general assembly. You were forced into the delegation on the instruction of you father – a man who said that the Ministry of Health was the most corrupt institution in Sri Lanka whilst he was the minister for five years!

Your immature rhetoric cuts nothing through the fact that you are well aware of the need to ‘groom’ an incompetent minion purely due to nepotism. The Rajapakses must be laughing – at least Namal was an MP.

You will drag down your father with you in this quest for international enlightenment – when you hit the ground – and hard – you will realise all this is temporary and no amount of switching off nightclub cameras will protect you or your father.

      1

      Just Saying

It should be the father’s responsibility to see everything is not only done without favoritism but seem to have done it. The father out of the 21 Million population has chosen his brat to attend the most important event in the UN calendar.

If this is not blatant nepotism what is?

Now it seem there are new b***s carriers who are unashamedly willing to justify clearly a flagrant violation of trust.

By all the gods that watch over us, is there no one who can give the President proper, decent advise?

This visit to the UN is a business trip. It is not a state visit. The limited seats in that hall are for those qualified to be there. You are not qualified by being the son of the President, per se. Neither is it to our credit to have Mr Mangala Samaraweera looking like a bloody babysitter.

Is everyone around the naked President just saying ‘the clothes look great O almighty one’? Those effeminate and ineffective advisers are the ones who should take at least some of the blame for this highly visible indignity.

What a load bull from Daham ! Does he think we are stupid to accept his laid of crap? nepotism means abusing one’s family connections to get undue advantage ! If he wasn’t so and so’s son he wouldn’t be sitting with an official delegation at main session, reserved for those representing the country in official capacity ! What’s his official status ? Further he wouldn’t have gone for any youth conference of he wasn’t the son ! What’s his qualification and official status to represent Sri Lanka at this conference, regardless of what he thinks he learnt ? What’s he going to do with what he learnt as in implementing / imparting that knowledge back in the country ? What a waste of space !! Stop trying to justify your trip and the perks ! If your mother went will she be sitting at the UN sessions where none of the spouses are present ???? What’s his position to attend official discussions with PMs and Presidents of other nations ??? If this is not nepotism, what IS??

When will the political brats stop talking b****cks?

Daham Sirisena should understand that there are millions of youth in this island who are bright, clever, more qualified, deserving, representative .. than a thug of the president.

It is customary for the wife to join the husbands on official foreign trips as hostess. Does this young thing know how to host a banquet?

“I urge you all not to compare me and my family with the past regiments as we are far different from them.”

Is this political brat justifying by comparing his father to his protector MR? We are not interested.

“The officials stated that, next time to bring in more youths with more innovative ideas which could in turn enrich our country by seeing my presence. I believe that this is a great opportunity to give positive recognition to our country.”

Of course your brand of Blue Brigade will benefit from a all expense paid free trip. Those aspiring brilliant kids stand no chance.

We have had enough bull from politicians.

Daham Sirisena should go back to Pasikuda and confessed to the police as to what his friends and him did to Asela, ask for maximum sentence for obstructing Justice, serve sentence, come back and say sorry, then he might have a public role to play.

None will agree that Daham Sirisena is the best person to inspire youth because he is a political brat, which he has proven beyond doubt.

    Daham Sirisena should writing bull.

      Native Vedda,

“It is customary for the wife to join the husbands on official foreign trips as hostess.”

I am not so sure about this. Any evidence from other countries? The wives might be very busy professionals who refuse to travel and work as a hostess.

My wife being a conservative Jaffna lady from a so called good family would never become a hostess in New York. Maybe Mrs Sirisena also has similar cultural problems?

Do husbands of female politicians and business women follow their wives to serve as a host abroad?

The Swiss president met Daham. Where was her husband if she has one?

Daham, you are a son of a President. You have a higher moral authority to give the less fortunate a chance to represent our country.

Your interpretation of nepotism lacks the spirit of the true meaning. You are creating a bad influence on children of future Presidents to game the system.

Remember – former President’s children had similar sentiments like you are expressing today.

This country belongs to ALL SRI LANKANS, not only to people in power.

Don’t give politics a bad name. You are making it worse.

New Prince, your contention is that you were officially invited(for this or that reason).

A government official has to go that position thorough proper education and interview. A person holding a political office representing the people has to be there under a proper election procedure. The New King, your father has no authority to select anyone arbitrarily to accompany him at his will.

The ground your official invitation is what called nepotism. New Prince, if you didn’t go and the New Queen was at the youth events or main events it is not removing the nepotism. A first lady can not overstep her authority or responsibility. Watch for what events the western diplomats’ spouses are accompanying their partners.

  • 42
    1

Daham, if that is the case i am sure there are better qualified youth in the country than yourself. The wives of heads of state are invited not to attend the sessions but to be with their spouses during their visit to the US. So dont bluff us with your false statements. We didn’t see Michele Obama , Xijingpin’s wife, Putin’s wife, Cameron’s wife but we saw Sirisena’s son there. How ludicrous is that?

Please give Sri Lanka the self respect it deserves which the Rajapakse’s robbed from us the last 10 years. Also remember that you are in that position because the people put your father in that place and you have no business to abuse that in any way.

I think most of these comments are healthy. When Maithree became president it should have been obvious to everybody that there would be little problems like this. I see the members of this family as being honest but unsophisticated. The family has to acquire sophistication. We have pushed them in to the deep end of the pool. Let us not be as helpful as possible in making criticisms.

Most of the comments amount to quite constructive suggestions to this young man. It would help the cause of your family, your father, your country, and us who supported your father and Ven. Sobitha’s organisation, if you used the present advantages that you have to educate yourself for a profession other than politics. Let somebody else, be the beneficiary of your father’s political legacy. Select a totally different field to excel in yourself.

The stakes are high. I am sure that some of the comments come from evil people who support the deposed dictator.

Conclusion. Maithri will make a Statement in due couse admitting the mistake of his son
being in attendance at the UN along with him?. THIS IS GOOD GOVERNANCE.
(Fortunately RW is out of this kind of situation!)

MS has banned his brothers visiting his Official residence according to a webnews, since
he became President – why Oh why?

The boy speaketh English and writeth English too. Not like the father.. So give him a break. Do you rather want him back on the Beaches of Nilaveli with his pervert buddies harassing married women or at clubs in COlombo breaking furniture. His mother could not attend. So he went in lieu of the mother. Obama takes Michele Obama all the time. Blair took Cherie. Official trips ALWAYS include a family member. Ask ACS Hameed’s family how many relatives he took at tax payer expense. Only Kadir did not.

This is sheer arrogance. Both President Sirisena who talks like a “Bodhi Sathwa” and his son are behaving like thugs.

    Dear friend Daham

Your justification for joining our delegation in the prestigious UN General Assembly in New York does not fly.
Your Mother may have been invited, but she had no place in those seats reserved for government
officials in the payroll of our government either. Michelle Obama did not sit with the US delegation but
separately in front during her husband’s speech. Most probably she left afterwards. The mere fact that
within a year of his being elected your father decided to flaunt his son in front of the world, when he
has been known to criticize the previous regime for nepotism, is simply ironic. He has to show he does
not stoop to the same methods as the Rajapaksa’s. You should have gone shopping, or gone sight seeing
(so much for a kid to see and do over there), and not sat with our delegation, you have no place there, and should not have been seen. Since you have inserted yourself in a dignified
arena, I hope you learned that many leaders spoke of settling disputes with diplomacy, and not with war (or in your case, fists) Next time thaththi offers to take you to sit on such an important seat, decline and say you have no place there, and it is not the right thing to do.

Try to be a shining example for our Sri Lankan kids, and not an embarrassment. Thank you.

Good on ya buddy…You made my day..

I know your your dad done the dirty on our majority, by giving the PM job to a Dude who couldn’t even win a Chook Raffle for twenty years.

I am glad the conference or what ever you attended appreciated your contribution.and asked you to bring more of yous next time when you come over.

Please make sure you pick a few Dalits also next time , because they also have aspirations, ambitions and goals in their lives beside doing assembly jobs which Yahapalana PM promised them with the blessing of the West.

But please make sure you don’t ask the “Prince” to nominate any , because the Prince wants all his followers to live like old Cubans.

BTW, appreciate if you refrain from having a dig at the previous “Regiments”.

I don’t know about past Regiments ,but the last Regime has done the most for the Dalits and even a visually impaired person can see it.

And you ought to remember that you and your old man and even your uncles benefited from it.

If you can do something to restore the momentum of that development which your darling dad and his new mates stopped for petty political gain and revenge, it will be immensely appreciated by the Dalits in the South in particular .

And it will be more beneficial for them than those junkets to sit and listen to those Western mates who are not really interested in our Dalits’ needs.

“I don’t know about past Regiments ,but the last Regime has done the most for the Dalits and even a visually impaired person can see it.”

Sumanasekera, You should be ashamed of your Comment, above.

You may have had the good fortune to be educated in English, whereas this young man was forced to study in Sinhala in his Motherland.

BTW, I could point out Grammatical Lapses in your Comments too!

Hey Sumanasekeram, the last regime was full of [Edited out] from Hambantota. Are you one of them? Look at them, they are a disgrace in front of the international community.

    What do you expect people.

Both father and son have no idea what nepotism is. For that matter all politicians in Sri Lanka have no idea what nepotism is. Dahams explanation in facebook confirms that he has absolutely no clue as to what nepotism is.

He believes that because he is the son of the president he has a absolute right to represent Sri Lanka. I always contended that the word ‘Yahapalanaya’ is just a word to bamboozle the hapless voter. All the known rogues, kudu mudalalis, murderers are in the Yahapalanaya government.

I assure you Sirisena is no better than MARA. Do not be surprised if the white vans make a come back soon.

Next time will he ask for a air conditioned room at Law College to sit for an exam or ask for a Phd at J Pura in youth counselling and say not to compare his family with the previous regime. I cannot see our PR/UN anywhere in the photos? What is that chap doing? May be preparing rice and curry and string hoppers and pol samboal with dried fish (karavila) to HE and Putha.

I think MS messed up more than Dhaham. The fact Dhaham is a young man who may not yet understand the protocol regime. MS has no excuse. He jolly well knows it. He should have set the rules.

The fact that Dhaham was invited in lieu of the First Lady does not mean that he can go and sit in GA of UN. No spouse does that. Not even MR’s wife! So Dhaham should have simply kept out of sight at the GA UN. I think this reeks of nepotism. There is no two words about it. Let’s call a spade a spade. MS you are guilty of it. Frankly it shocks me that you allowed it.

As to being introduced to other Heads of States is a different matter. Generally the spouse is introduced to other Head of State. So Dhaham being introduced is quite appropriate.

So MS your slip is showing.

I agree that MS should have realised before sitting the son behind him. It’s totally against the protocol whether it’s for the wife or another member of the family.
You would not have known about it but the others including your father should have protected you. Now this stigma will stick with you forever.
Next time you need to use your own intelligence too when it comes to push. You don’t take others words as gospel as the adults have let you down on this instant.
Learn by making mistakes but make this as your final mistake in your life.
An apology to the country may be appropriate, I am sure you can get the trust back from your fellow country men who are looking for blood from you.

At least with Mahinda Rajapakse we get what we see in him.He did not preach to
be a saint and did not pretend to become an Enlighted bodisatwa. With Maitri he has been preaching that he and his family are clean had not commited any sins.Day by day this boru show is exposed. This President is more dangerous than
    the corrupt Mahinda

giving them occupations? what does that mean Daham?
Regiments ? As in the Army? MR’s regiment?
Youths? Youth is youth not Youths.

That year in England where your Appachchi exiled you for your thuggish behavior has not helped you yet but it is a decent attempt at English compared to Malaka and Mervyn etc. BTW your Appachchi was a Colonel in that OLD REGIMENT of MR’s was he not? Did he not refer to that Namal Baba’s Appachchi as “Maha RAjek” after he beat the Tamil Tigers? Then your Appachchi was tutored by Chandrika Madam no? What you should have said on your Facebook page is if it was ok for Chandrika madam to take Ramzi Rahman and Padma Maharajah in her entourage it is ok for my Grama Sevaka Appachchi to do the same. Except there is catch Putha. Chandrika never took her children on official trips. She never would seat them in the Assembly. Obama takes Michele Anty but she sits in the Gallery as an observer NOT as an active participant at floor level. But work at it, you are repeating the MR Regiment’s Namal Baba’s practices except Namal baba NEVER sat in the participatory delegations at UN or any other global forum including CHOGM. You Amma was invited as part of tradition. She will be seated in the gallery for guest NOT as a member of the delegation.

Putha, what are your educational qualifications? Your Appachchi’s puppet master and king maker Madam’s children are highly educated and classy and live quiet lives. JRJ’s son worked behind the scenes and got Israeli and British SAS help to form the brilliant SAS. Sirima madam’s son Anura didn’t do much but he had a degree from LSE(that is London School of Economics putha and is a highly prestigious place). I am told you are getting a digiree from there too? anyway we hope your Engreesi will become better with more interaction with youths and you have occupations in your regiment for your loyalists.

As it is said, “Engreesi danney naththanum Bentara gangeng mehaata awilla wedak naha” ,Translated, (I am sure you were the official interpreter for His Excellency) it means “If you do not know any English, no point in crossing to this side of the Bentara river”.

All these donkies who are writing here are MR’r regiments youths putha. Not to worry. You are really awesome on Facebook. Looked like Prince Charles’ English.

    Dear Daham

There is nothing technically or morally wrong in you attending various functions with your father. This is something any parent would do. But the question is what is the basis for the government to invite you as opposed to other youth in the country? What is criteria used to make the decisions? How would you justify you being chosen to represent the country when there are so many youth doing interesting work? More importantly, if it is purely a private decision by your father, who covered your expenses? Do you even live in the country now? You are the best person to answer these questions.

But I must say that your response to your critics avoid these questions.

I think Yahapalanaya is all about good decision making procedures. I hope that will be more careful in what you do so that you can support your father’s good intention and good work!
