The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani has expressed serious concern at the recent incidents of violence by extremist individuals against Muslims in the towns of Aluthgama, Beruwala and Draga Nagar in Sri Lanka. The reports of several fatalities and dozens injured as well as attacks on homes, businesses and mosques are deeply regrettable.

He noted that the Muslim community in Sri Lanka has a long standing presence in the country and a tradition of living in peace and harmony with their compatriots. Muslims represents an important and active community which contributes to the cultural and economic life of Sri Lanka as a whole. The recent attacks appear to follow a rising trend of violence instigated by extremists which is spreading fear and mistrust among the population.
While appealing for calm and peaceful relations between the communities, Madani urged the authorities to enforce the rule of law, investigate the incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Secretary General expressed the hope that every possible effort would be exerted by the Sri Lankan authorities to prevent further escalation of violence.

While Muslims must welcome this message of concern by the OIC, let no one assume that it is anything more than that. Having known the OIC, I do not expect them to do anything of the sort that people writing here are predicting such as economic embargo on SL or kicking out SL workers. The OIC is not an Arab organization, though its current SG is an Arab. The last SG was Turkish Dr Ismetoglu. OIC is more concerned with inter-member economic and educational cooperation. They have never done anything like a political action when Muslims are affected anywhere. Take the example of Burma. They sent only a mere message to Burma.
The gulf Arab countries form only less than 5% of the membership. Countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives etc value their friendship with SL more than the welfare of us Muslims in SL and so are the gulf Arabs. Hakeem is the only smart man. For him, lighting his cigar is right thing to do while the house is burning. He always does the right thing at the right time based on the Hakeem Doctrine.

Just look at how stupid this Sri Lankan government is. They gave a news blackout order on the mob violence purportedly to prevent the conflagration to other parts of the country. But still we all know, if it was not blocked it would have been biased anyway. We have had experience of it during LTTE battle for territory. However, this promptly started the rumor mill and people were thoroughly confused and panicked. But the news on the ground was constantly being updated on the Internet and the whole world was privy to the governments ‘dirty’ works. Did the blackout really serve its purpose? The same thing happened during the final phase of the LTTE battle. All journalists were removed from the battle theater, but US satellites were focused to just 50 meters from the ground and captured all the images they wanted, which is now in their custody as evidence of HR violations on both sides – civilians as human shields and the purported collateral damage caused to civilians caused by government shelling. Later of course as we all now know channel 4 journalists fooled our ‘gallant’ soldiers (I don’t trust them anymore after this Aluthgama uprising) who took trophy shots of their war bounties and victims, and politely collected all the evidence and compiled it into the film ‘Killing Fields’. What I am trying to say is no amount of blocking will help to block the truth from getting revealed, in this day and age when electronic media has so revolutionized our way of accessing news and may be even our reading habits. Our government is still living in the dark ages of print. Woe be unto them.
Now we also understand by rough estimates that those who looted the homes of these Muslims have netted a lot of jewelery to share amongst for themselves as bounty, (Haram wealth of course) or does it go to government coffers I wonder. Shame on them. Very similar to what LTTE did to poor Tamils and Muslims expelled from Jaffna although reasons quite far apart. They did it for land to call their own, but the ‘mob’ for pure greed. I can understand property being destroyed, but imagine these Sinhala Buddhists killing animals and birds, merely because they were the property of a Muslim. As Ranjan Wijeyratne once said these Sinhala Buddhists have no right to live in society. The sooner they are eliminated would augur well for this country.

@kevin . I don’t think they will freeze the jobs or send back Sinhala Buddhist back. These Arabs only think about south asian / non arab muslims as second class or bonded slave workers. It is the muslims from Sri Lanka who think Arabs care about them. They think every thing these Arabs does as ISLAM . So they blindly adopt every BS coming from Arab(specially GCC) countries .

@Neesh: The Arabs banned Sikhs from all the middle-eastern countries, so to ban the Sinhalese is no problem. The Arabs can replace all the Sinhalese labourers, toilet cleaners, street sweepers, and maids with Muslims from Bangladesh and Indonesia where corruption and inefficiency keeps people poor and makes them desperate for foreign jobs, just like Sri Lankans . Time will tell….

This may not be a strong statement but a clear sign that the attacks on Muslims in Sri Lanka has hit the OIC radar, it is not common for OIC to issue statements of this kind.
This is a significant development. Hope SLG gets the message last year one remittance company alone has remitted US290 million bulk of it coming from Middle East. It’t foreign exchange, hard earned money of lankans going through untold hardships which is running this country and helping bridge the balance of payment gap.
Clear warning has been issued by rating agencies (Fitch and Standard and Poor’s) about our high debt.
It will only take a small twist for the whole economy to collapse.
The current trend of violence is something which is clearly does not help us in any way except for selected few ! we know who they are.
It’s only family politics matter, not what consequences it has on country and it’s people.
